MSNBC Historical Hurricane Map

Building off the success of our earlier work visualizing live hurricane activity, MSNBC asked us to take things one step further and build a historical hurricane browser. The idea was to show the 1410 hurricanes that (as of this writing) have been tracked since 1851, and provide a reasonably intuitive way to navigate the more than 40,000 locations and strength measurements that make up the tracks of these dangerous storms. While the overall view showing all the storms (above) is pretty, it's only when you start to narrow things down that you start to be able to answer interesting questions about activity overall. So the project has a time slider that you can use to filter results by year:

And a state slider, so you can filter results by what state the storm made landfall on:
